Tech Startups Sizzle in Silicon Beach: Why LA’s Hot for Tech

LA’s connection with the entertainment industry became the answer of choice for the panel: the entertainment industry needs to innovate—everything from tools for animators, ad-ops, marketing, mobile, revenue streams, social, etc.—and needs people and companies that can help.

Josh Payne, cofounder of Stack Social, explains: “It’s the convergence of content and commerce,” that makes LA so attractive for tech startups.

What about access to capital for Silicon Beach startups? founder Dan Gould: “Capital is mobile.” The panel agrees that if you’re doing something awesome you’ll be able to draw investors from the Valley or NY.

“We didn’t even take a trip to Silicon Valley,” says YieldMetrics cofounder Gabe Gottlieb. A graduate of LA accelerator Launchpad.LA, YieldMetrics closed its initial round of fundraising at $1.7M.

Weather was also a plus: especially for Eyerly who moved Surf Air, and its employees, to LA from Utah. “Most of our employees live within four blocks of the office. They ride bikes to work,” says Eyerly.
